Most who read this blog know that our daughter is a tomboy. The genuine article. Dyed-in-the-wool. Unadulterated. Though I did secretly hope for a tomboy, I did not press her to be one. The love of ball sports and daredevilry, along with the utter disregard for anything frou-frou, frilly or sparkly (she actually denies it fervently every time I tell her she's cute, and doesn't even dignify the word "pretty" with a response), was hardwired into her from the get-go. It is none of our doing. So it is pure comedy to watch her "shave" next to her daddy. She used to try to do it with his razors, until we were forced to buy her a plastic "shaving" kit with kid-friendly (Spiderman brand) shaving cream.
She climbs up on the toilet lid so as to be able to perform her ablutions flank by flank with her dear old dad.
The girl really is too much, don't you agree?
The one compliment that does not make her frown and shake her head is "You make mommy laugh!"

I have to admit that I secretly and thrilled to have a girlie-girl. A well-rounded one at that - she loves to be wild, get dirty (and I mean covered in mud from head-to-toe), roll around with any sort of four-legged friend, throws a ball like nobody's business, and jumps from the highest peaks, but she also knows how to rock a tutu while doing her version of Flamenco dancing with beads piled around her neck. I guess we all get what we wish for in the big scheme of things.
Q shaving like her Papa is a definite winner image!

What a cute little girl. How fun children are (especially at that age). I just found your blog and love your writing style. Your illustrations are amazing.

Thanks Casa Bella! I'm going to settle in and explore your blog now :)

Mel, it's interesting, because I am a lot more like your daughter - half and half. My own mother is the kind of genuine, 100% tomboy that Q is. Maybe that's why I felt more equipped to handle a real tomboy as a daughter. Since Q is of course not related to us by blood, she came to it by her own means. I love that she is so much her own person. But I feel very fortunate to have her, because she is exactly the sort of daughter I dreamed of raising. Of course, she also looks fabulous in clothes, so I get to indulge that side of my own personality, at least until she is old enough to put her foot down and say "I'm not wearing that!" And that day is getting closer by the minute! More power to her for knowing her own mind ;)

Maxine is a genuine girly-girl, so I enjoy reading your account of your little tough girl. She sounds like an awful lot of fun, but as much from the funloving side of her as her tomboyishness. What a happy combination!
