In the heart of darkness, amid the knick-knack stores and chain restaurants, charicature artists and candy factories down by Fisherman's wharf, lies the weird, twisted, wonderful world of the Musée Mechanique. They need better lighting and a curator who cares...but oh, man, it's a treasure trove!
What a fantastic series of photos - it certainly looks like a treasure trove! If you're ever passing through Glasgow (Scotland) on your travels you should check out the Sharmanka kinetic gallery/theatre - it's another wonderful hidden treasure! (Sadly their website doesn't do their sculptures justice at all)

Cooooool. Love the burlesquey, raddled, faded glamour of it all. Who doesn't love coin op automata? I defy anyone.
Rima also found a wonderful shop similar to that one. Read it up on her blog. I love these pictures. They match the benign decline of the objects.
Oh what a fantastic place!! Will visit next time i'm in SF...
It´s so nostalgic - love these pictures!
Wow!
Who know, a "proper" curator may just ruin the whole fun. ;-)
The Gene Kelly doll looks as if it had run out of momentum at a crucial moment! However, a great tour, thank you.
These are amazing. Thanks for posting!
