No pencil. Just pen. Actually, I did this while at a painting workshop in Italy, and it just so happened that my roommate (a video game designer) had recently taken a plein air pen sketching workshop in NYC with a very famous illustrator who teaches you how to draw very quickly in permanent ink while you're walking. I didn't believe it was possible until I saw her do it, and then I had to try! So I walked around the countryside for the rest of that week in Tuscany drawing on a tiny sketchpad until I could do it. Then, in Rome for the final three days of my trip, I really had a ball with the technique. So much fun!
It brings back so many wonderful memories of Firenze and Siena. My BIL spent a year there for his architect diploma and drawing tons of sketches. Wish I was as talented as you both...
